San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Tuesday evening in the 2700 block of Nipoma Street in San Diego.
San Diego police officers were dispatched at 4:40 p.m. following a welfare check call that was later updated to a report of a residential burglary in progress.
When officers arrived on scene, they contacted the homeowner who reported that firearms were inside the residence and that no one had permission to enter the property. Because of the potential threat, the San Diego Police Department’s SWAT team responded and used tactical procedures to safely resolve the incident.
While officers were attempting to make contact, a couple of gunshots were heard from inside the home. At approximately 9:20 p.m., a man holding a firearm exited through the front door. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the man was struck. Paramedics responded, and the individual was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 9:40 p.m. No officers were injured during the incident.
Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded and is conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation.
Once the Sheriff’s Office concludes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the involved officers bear any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officers’ discharge of their firearms.
