El Cajon, CA–The use of Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras by the El Cajon Police Department made an impact in reducing crime across the city, according to newly released data.
On Tuesday, Police Chief Mike Moulton provided the El Cajon City Council with an update on the success of the Flock Safety ALPR system since its implementation.
“The cameras have been an invaluable tool in keeping our community safe and deterring crime,” said Chief Moulton. “This technology provides our officers with real-time information when a suspect drives through the city, and sends a clear message to would-be criminals that we’re keeping a close eye on our streets.”
Key accomplishments from the first year of the program include the recovery of 128 stolen vehicles (valued at over $1.2 million), 151 arrests tied to recovered stolen cars, confiscation of 5 illegal firearms, seizures of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other illicit drugs as a result of ALPR-related arrests, and assisted with the arrests of two teens in connection with a double homicide.
Since August 6, 2023, approximately 40 fixed license plate reading cameras have been operational across El Cajon. Given the system’s success, Chief Moulton recommended that the city council consider expanding the program’s reach. He also indicated plans to explore whether unfilled police positions could be allocated to support this expansion.
