San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Department of Animal Services has identified the suspect involved in a horrific dog-dragging incident that led to the animal’s death, officials confirmed.
According to officials, the dog’s owner came forward after seeing news footage of the July 2 incident on television. He contacted County Animal Services and admitted that it was his truck and dog involved in the video. Animal Control officers later visited the man’s residence and confirmed he was the driver seen in the footage.
The dog sustained severe injuries in the dragging incident and was euthanized by a veterinary clinic before officers arrived. Authorities were able to recover the dog’s remains before cremation to preserve evidence for the ongoing investigation.
“This is an incredibly sad and disturbing case,” said Vaughn Maurice, Director of County Animal Services. “While we are grateful to have identified the person responsible, our hearts break for this dog and what it endured.”
San Diego County Animal Services has submitted the case to the District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution.
