Oceanside shares preferred alternative for Inland Rail Trail

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–The City of Oceanside is conducting a feasibility study for the final segment of the 21-mile Inland Rail Trail, a multi-use path along the Sprinter rail line that will connect the cities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, and Escondido.

Once completed, the rail project will provide a safe and accessible route to the beach, jobs, housing, and recreation from Escondido to the coast.

In Spring 2025, the City of Oceanside conducted several public engagement activities to gather input on three alternative alignments for the final 7.4-mile segment of the project. Through an online survey, pop-up outreach events, and a community open house, the city engaged more than 1,000 people.

This input helped to develop a preferred alignment that is now being shared with the public. The city is asking residents, business owners, and stakeholders to share their thoughts on the preliminary design concepts and draft feasibility study through a final online survey.

“Community input has been an important part of this planning process, and the public has shared that it is a priority to enhance mobility, connect neighborhoods, and provide safe, sustainable transportation options for residents and visitors alike,” said Luis Cardenas, project manager for the Oceanside Inland Rail Trail. “We’re looking forward to receiving comments through the survey to help us refine the preferred alignment and move the project forward.”

The public can take the online survey through December 5.
