San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality has issued updated beach advisories in response to ongoing sewage contamination affecting coastal waters.
A water contact closure has been extended to include the Silver Strand shoreline due to the continued flow of the Tijuana River into nearby recreational waters. County officials warn that ocean water in the area contains sewage and may pose serious health risks to swimmers and beachgoers. The closure will remain in effect until water quality sampling and field observations confirm that the area is safe for public contact.
Advisories are still in effect for Ocean Beach Dog Beach, Mission Bay’s Ventura Cove, and the La Jolla Children’s Pool due to bacterial levels that exceed state health standards.
The entire shoreline from the U.S.-Mexico border through the northern end of Imperial Beach remains closed as well. Health officials stress that the ocean water in these areas is contaminated with sewage and should be avoided until further notice.
The county will continue to monitor ocean water quality and update the public once conditions are deemed safe. Beachgoers are urged to heed all warnings and posted signs to protect their health.
