Escondido police to conduct DUI enforcement operation

By Gina Yarbrough

Escondido, CA–The Escondido Police Department will conduct a DUI enforcement operation on Friday, targeting drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, authorities said.

The DUI operation will be conducted from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

“Strict enforcement of DUI laws is an important component of our overall traffic safety strategy,” said Chief of Police Ken Plunkett. “Every impaired driving crash is 100% preventable. Choosing to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs isn’t just breaking the law – it’s gambling with lives.”

Police remind motorists that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely. Additionally, while marijuana use is legal in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.

According to the department, a first-time DUI conviction can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

The enforcement effort is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, provided via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
