Escondido, CA–Escondido Police are seeking public assistance in identifying a vehicle they believe was involved in a hit-and-run last month, which claimed the life of a 14-year-old skateboarder.
Surveillance footage captured an image of the car, a newer model gray Honda Civic, which police hope will lead to new information.
The incident occurred on August 8 in the 1100 block of North Fig Street, shortly before 9:30 p.m.
A witness reported seeing a vehicle speeding south on North Fig Street after the collision. The teen, identified as Angel Ornelas Ponce, had been riding his skateboard home from a friend’s house when he was struck.
Escondido authorities received a 911 call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived at the location, they found the boy lying unconscious in the street. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver fled the scene, leaving investigators to appeal for any information that could help bring closure to the grieving family.
Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Smyth at (760) 839-4423. The boy’s family is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that helps identify the driver involved in the hit-and-run incident.
