Del Mar, CA–Lifeguards rescued a 50-year-old female swimmer who suffered serious injuries from an apparent shark bite in the ocean in Del Mar on Friday morning.

Lifeguards responded to a report at 10 a.m. of a swimmer who appeared to be in distress in the ocean. She was accompanied by another swimmer. Once ashore, lifeguards noted an injury consistent with a shark bite. After receiving medical aid from lifeguards, the injured swimmer was transported to the hospital where she was reported to be recovering and in stable condition.

In accordance with guidance from the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, lifeguards closed access to the beach and water one mile to the north and south of 17th Street through at least Sunday morning.

Lifeguards continue to monitor the water after an initial search did not reveal sharks. They will perform drone flyovers and patrol the area throughout the weekend from dawn until dusk.
