Five rescued after boat capsizes near Oceanside Harbor

Oceanside, CA–Five people were rescued Sunday morning after a small powerboat capsized near the Oceanside Harbor jetty, prompting a multi-agency emergency response that included lifeguards, firefighters, and several private boaters.

At about 10:25 a.m., Oceanside Lifeguard personnel saw a small vessel struck by breaking surf near the harbor mouth before it overturned. Lifeguard Tower 14 reported five people in the water, triggering a rescue-ocean response with fire dispatch.

Oceanside’s Marine Safety Unit Rescue Boat BT2164 arrived to find a 25-foot powerboat capsized, with victims scattered among nearby vessels. Lifeguards and good Samaritans helped bring all five to shore, where firefighters and paramedics were waiting. Three of the rescued individuals were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Among those assisting in the rescue was a 12-year-old Oceanside Junior Lifeguard who was aboard his family’s fishing boat when the vessel capsized. The young rescuer, a four-year participant in the city’s summer program, quickly signaled a nearby jet ski operator to help retrieve victims. While heading back to the lifeguard dock, he provided first aid to a patient with a leg injury and offered his own clothing to another who was suffering from the cold.

“This incident showcases exactly what the Junior Lifeguard Program is all about,” said Lifeguard Sergeant Lola Swank. “Our youth learn not only lifesaving skills but also how to stay calm, think critically, and help others in moments of crisis. We couldn’t be more proud to see one of our Junior Lifeguards put those lessons into action in a real-life rescue.”

After all victims were safely brought to shore, Rescue Boat BT2164 returned to the overturned vessel. It towed it to a secure area, where Tow Boat U.S. completed salvage and recovery operations.

Officials reminded boaters to check ocean conditions before heading out, wear lifejackets, and use caution when navigating near the harbor entrance.
