San Diego, CA–An inmate in Sheriff’s custody passed away at a local hospital after being treated for complications associated with several long-term illnesses, authorities said.

Sheriff’s Homicide investigators were notified on Tuesday of the death of 43-year-old Aaron Bonin, who was transferred to the San Diego Central Jail from the Department of State Hospitals forensic psychiatric facility in Patton, California, for further court proceedings on September 1, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

Bonin was charged with battery and gassing of a peace officer, and assault with a deadly weapon. An arrest warrant was issued for him in San Bernardino County for assaulting an officer.

While in custody, Bonin was evaluated and treated for several documented medical and mental health concerns, which were identified upon his transfer from Patton State Hospital. Sheriff’s medical staff referred him to local hospitals multiple times for acute care.

On October 24, Bonin was admitted to a local hospital after being discovered unresponsive while lying on the floor of his cell. CPR was administered by deputies until an automated external defibrillator arrived and was utilized. He was transported to UCSD Hospital a short time later by paramedics, where he was admitted and treated.

On November 1, Bonin’s health declined and he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Department said.

As a matter of practice, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit investigates all deaths of persons in custody at the time of their passing. The Medical Examiner’s Office has been notified of the death. The cause and manner of death are still under investigation.

The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board was notified of the death.
