San Diego, CA–The San Diego Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death of a 38-year-old man who died in Sheriff’s custody at the George Bailey Detention Facility on Sunday, authorities said.
According to reports, deputies discovered Almajid unresponsive in his bunk around 11:15 a.m. Deputies and jail medical staff began medical aid in an attempt to revive him. Paramedics from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection continued lifesaving measures upon their arrival at the facility.
In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the Almajid family and those affected by his passing. A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will support the family during this difficult time.
Almajid was arrested on December 20, 2023, by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force for multiple counts of sodomy with a child 10 years or younger. He was booked into the San Diego Central Jail and later transferred to the George Bailey Detention Facility on December 26. Almajid resided in Ramona at the time of his arrest.
The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified of the incident.
As per protocol, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause and manner of Almajid’s death, which will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
