Dayton, OH–The San Diego State Aztecs’ season ended disappointingly Tuesday night with a 95-68 defeat to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA First Four in Dayton, Ohio.
The loss concluded the Aztecs’ 2024-25 campaign with a 21-10 record.
North Carolina (23-13) came out blazing, shooting a remarkable 60.9 percent from the field in the first half, building a commanding 47-23 lead by halftime. The Tar Heels maintained offensive dominance throughout the game, finishing with a 52.6 percent shooting rate. Their 95-point total marked the most points scored against SDSU in a regulation game since Brigham Young’s 100-90 victory over the Aztecs on February 22, 2006.
RJ led the charge for North Carolina, scoring 26 points while shooting an impressive 8-of-12 from the floor, including a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond the arc.
With the win, the Tar Heels advance to the NCAA First Round, where they will face sixth-seeded Ole Miss in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Despite the loss, Nick Boyd and Dwayne McKinney III each contributed 12 points for San Diego State, which made its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. However, the Aztecs struggled against elite competition this season, dropping to 5-7 against teams that qualified for the tournament.
