Chula Vista, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, hosted a Gun Safety Event in Chula Vista, aimed at removing unwanted firearms from the streets.
The event, held on Saturday at the South Bay Courthouse on the 500 block of 3rd Avenue, resulted in the collection of 112 firearms. Participants turned in handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assault weapons in exchange for gift cards—$100 for standard firearms and $200 for assault weapons.
Collected firearms will undergo processing to determine if they were involved in crimes. If any are identified as stolen, the original owners will be notified. The remaining firearms will be destroyed in compliance with legal requirements.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to its partners, including the Imperial Beach Sheriff’s Substation, San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Coronado Police Department, National City Police Department, and San Diego Police Department, for their contributions to the event’s success.
Unwanted firearms can also be surrendered year-round at any Sheriff’s station, substation, or law enforcement agency. To ensure safety, individuals should secure the firearms in their car trunk and follow instructions from law enforcement.
