Sheriff’s deputies arrest three people at Vista DUI checkpoint

By Gina Yarbrough

Vista, CA–Sheriff’s deputies conducted a Driving Under the Influence and driver’s license checkpoint Saturday night, resulting in multiple arrests and citations in Vista, authorities said.

The checkpoint was held in the 700 block of East Vista Way from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 306 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with 15 drivers directed to a secondary area for further evaluation.

Deputies arrested three drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. No arrests were made for driving under the influence of drugs.

In addition to the DUI arrests, 12 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license, including licenses that were suspended or revoked. Three vehicles were impounded as a result of the enforcement operation.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office reminded the public that impaired driving extends beyond alcohol use. Officials cautioned that some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Funding for the DUI and driver’s license checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
