Inmate dies after medical emergency at San Diego Central Jail

By SDCN Staff

San Diego, CA–A 35-year-old man in custody at San Diego Central Jail died Saturday afternoon after being found unresponsive in his cell, authorities said.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred around 3:08 p.m. on August 30, when other inmates alerted deputies that the man was in medical distress. Deputies entered the cell, found the man unresponsive, and initiated lifesaving measures while calling for medical staff and emergency services.

San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel and paramedics arrived at the jail and continued life-saving efforts, and transported the man to a local hospital. He was later pronounced dead at 4:31 p.m.

The man had been booked into jail the day before, on August 29, on charges of vehicle theft and possession of stolen property, the Sheriff’s Department said. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

As standard procedure in all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating, and the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
