Oceanside lifeguards rescue five swimmers in near-drowning incident

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–Oceanside lifeguards and firefighters rescued five swimmers from the ocean in a near-drowning incident just south of Lifeguard Headquarters on Friday afternoon, authorities said.

At about 1:40 p.m., a bystander ran into Lifeguard Headquarters to alert lifeguards of swimmers in distress. Within minutes, the first lifeguard was in the water, launching a coordinated effort to bring all swimmers safely to shore.

The swimmers were treated following the incident. One swimmer was airlifted by helicopter to Scripps La Jolla Trauma Center. Two others were transported by ambulance to Tri-City Medical Center, while the remaining two declined further treatment after being evaluated.

“The quick response by lifeguards and firefighters, combined with the rapid notification from a bystander, played a critical role in preventing further tragedy,” the Oceanside Fire Department said in a statement.

Officials reminded beachgoers to swim near lifeguard towers, remain aware of surf and rip current conditions, and seek help immediately if they or others appear to be struggling. Simple precautions—such as staying close to designated swim areas and knowing personal limits—can make the difference between life and death, the department noted.
