NORTH COUNTY–Sheriff’s deputies arrested 15 people during a law enforcement operation targeting illegal encampments along the Sprinter rail line, citing narcotics-related offenses and misdemeanor trespassing warrants on North County Transit District property, authorities said.
The operation was conducted Feb. 4 and led by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit, with assistance from the Vista Patrol Station’s Gang Enforcement Team and the Oceanside Police Department.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the enforcement effort focused on the Sprinter Train right-of-way, a large corridor of land extending from Escondido to Oceanside. Officials said the area, which includes open fields and brush, has experienced a recent increase in illegal encampments occupied by what the department described as prolific criminal offenders, including individuals on active probation and parole.
Authorities said occupants of the encampments have repeatedly disrupted transit operations and posed safety risks to rail service and passengers.
The Sheriff’s Office said it continues to monitor the rail corridor in coordination with partner agencies to maintain long-term safety for North County Transit District property and the traveling public.
