San Diego, CA–The County has issued a water contact closure for Avenida Lunar beach in Coronado due to sewage contamination from the Tijuana River, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality confirmed.
The river is flowing into the ocean carrying the contaminated water into the recreational area.
The County advises the public to avoid all contact with ocean water in this area, as it may cause illness. The closure will remain in place until water quality tests and field inspections confirm that conditions have returned to safe levels.
The advisory for the San Diego River Dog Beach in Ocean Beach has been lifted. Recent water quality samples indicate that bacteria levels have dropped below state health standards, deeming the beach safe for public use once again.
La Jolla Children’s Pool, North Cove in Vacation Isle, and the San Luis Rey River Outlet remain under advisory or closure due to elevated bacteria levels or sewage contamination.
Swimmers and beachgoers are warned that water contact may pose a health risk due to high bacteria levels.
Closures continue for Tijuana Slough, the Imperial Beach shoreline, and the Silver Strand shoreline. Due to ongoing contamination, these beaches, stretching from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Silver Strand Campground, remain off-limits.
The County continues to monitor water quality and will update advisories and closures as new information becomes available.
Beachgoers are encouraged to check the latest conditions before visiting local beaches.
