San Diego law enforcement agencies host gun safety event

By SDCN Staff

San Marcos, CA–In a united effort to reduce gun violence and promote community safety, several local law enforcement agencies are teaming up for a countywide gun buyback event later this month.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, in collaboration with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Carlsbad Police Department, Palomar College Police Department, and the University Police Department at Cal State San Marcos, will host a Gun Safety Event on May 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station, 182 Santar Place in San Marcos.

Residents are encouraged to turn in unwanted firearms in exchange for gift cards—$100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons. No identification is required, and participants will remain anonymous. There will be no questions asked.

All firearms must be in working condition and unloaded, and should be placed in the trunk of the participant’s vehicle. Law enforcement officers will be on-site to provide instructions and safely collect the weapons. All collected firearms will be destroyed following the event.

The event is part of an ongoing initiative to enhance public safety by removing unused or unwanted guns from homes and neighborhoods.

For more information, and to download event flyers in English and Spanish, visit the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office website.
