Merle Wakefield

San Diego, CA–The San Diego Superior Court has ordered the conditional release of sexually violent predator Merle Wakefield to a proposed site in the east county.

The California Department of State Hospitals has recommended the placement of Wakefield at 10957 Horizon Hills Drive in unincorporated El Cajon. He was convicted of sexual assaults dating back to the 1980s and 1990s.

While this address falls within the jurisdiction of the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station, neither the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, or the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task Force are responsible for the selection of the proposed site. The selection process is the responsibility of the Department State Hospitals and the San Diego Superior Court, authorities stated.

Due to current COVID-19 health concerns, a placement hearing for Wakefield will be held through Zoom. Public comments will be accepted during the virtual hearing on May 10 at 9 a.m. at San Diego Superior Court, Department 2201 in San Diego.
