San Diego, CA–Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives were notified on October 5 that an individual in the custody of their department at George Bailey Detention Facility had died after being assaulted by other incarcerated individuals, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Department identified the injured man as 52-year-old Raymond Vogelman of San Diego.
According to reports, Vogelman was arrested by the San Diego Police Department and booked into the San Diego Central Jail for two counts of burglary and committing a felony while on bail. Vogelman was transferred to the George Bailey Detention Facility on September 1.
On October 5, just after 7 p.m., deputies observed several incarcerated individuals fighting in a housing module. Once the men were separated, deputies contacted Vogelman near his assigned bunk and noted he sustained injuries that required treatment by emergency medical personnel.
Deputies and jail medical staff administered aid until paramedics arrived on the scene. Vogelman was transported by paramedics to a hospital for further treatment. While at the hospital, Vogelman’s health continued to decline. Due to his injuries, he was later pronounced dead.
As a matter of practice, the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit investigates all deaths of persons in custody at the time of their passing. The circumstances of Vogelman’s death are still under investigation.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will schedule an autopsy.
