Two people rescued after boat overturns near Oceanside Harbor

By Gina Yarbrough

Oceanside, CA–Oceanside lifeguards rescued two people Monday afternoon after a 15-foot center-console boat overturned near the mouth of Oceanside Harbor, authorities said.

The incident was reported at approximately 1:27 p.m. and was first observed by a lifeguard stationed at an open harbor tower, who immediately initiated an ocean rescue response. Ten lifeguard personnel were dispatched, including additional lifeguard units, a rescue boat, a personal watercraft, and a supervising officer.

Lifeguards located and secured both occupants of the vessel. The individuals were transported to the Patrol Dock and transferred to an awaiting Oceanside Fire Department paramedic unit. One person was evaluated and released at the scene without injuries. The second occupant was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with injuries that were not specified.

The overturned vessel was later turned over to a commercial salvage company. The boat was removed from the rocks and returned to its owner at approximately 3:06 p.m.

Oceanside lifeguards reminded the public that conditions near harbor entrances can change rapidly due to swell, tides, and currents. Boaters are urged to check marine forecasts before departing, wear properly fitted life jackets, and use caution when navigating harbor mouths.
