San Marco, CA–A 19-year-old man was arrested Sunday after deputies used an automated license plate reader (ALPR) alert to locate a stolen vehicle, leading to a brief pursuit through San Marcos, authorities said.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received an ALPR alert at approximately 11:32 a.m. on July 12 indicating that a stolen white 2022 Kia Forte was traveling northbound on Nordahl Road near Montiel Road.
Deputies located the vehicle in the parking lot of Stater Bros. at 1330 E. Mission Road and attempted a traffic stop. Authorities said the driver failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens, prompting a pursuit.
The suspect reportedly reached speeds of up to 80 mph before stopping near Hollandia Park and fleeing on foot. Deputies apprehended the suspect following a brief foot chase.
The driver was identified as 19-year-old Johan Carranza Acosta. Deputies said he showed signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance and was taken to Kaiser Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
Acosta faces charges of evading a peace officer with disregard for public safety, auto theft and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Authorities said the Kia Forte sustained damage to its steering column and was towed from the scene. The vehicle’s registered owner was notified.
No injuries or property damage were reported.
The Sheriff’s Office said the ALPR camera system played a key role in locating the stolen vehicle and apprehending the suspect, adding that the technology continues to support law enforcement efforts to identify and arrest criminal offenders while enhancing public safety.
