Oceanside, CA–A motorcyclist was killed in a multi-motorcycle collision on Coast Highway in Oceanside on Saturday afternoon, authorities confirmed.
The Oceanside Police Department received reports of a major injury crash at 1:53 p.m. along Coast Highway near West Street. Upon arrival, officers found five to six sport motorcycles were traveling north when the accident occurred.
According to police, a vehicle had stopped in the number one northbound lane of Coast Highway, waiting to make a left turn. One motorcyclist began to slow down, but another rider failed to notice and rear-ended the first motorcycle. Both riders were thrown from their bikes and slid into oncoming traffic.
One of the motorcyclists was struck by a southbound Toyota Yaris, while the second rider collided with the side of another vehicle.
The rider who was struck by the Yaris sustained severe head and chest injuries. He was transported to a local hospital but was later pronounced dead. The second rider sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.
Neither of the drivers in the vehicles involved in the crash were injured.
The identity of the deceased rider has not yet been released, pending notification of their family.
The Oceanside Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation.
