Vista, CA–A Vista man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run collision that killed a pedestrian earlier this week, authorities said.
San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 37-year-old Paul Anthony Fletcher Jr. on Wednesday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death. Fletcher was booked into the San Diego Central Jail.
The collision occurred around 11:30 p.m. Monday in the 300 block of Sycamore Avenue. Deputies and paramedics responded to a report of an injured person after a passerby discovered a man lying on the sidewalk and called for help, authorities said.
When first responders arrived, they found the pedestrian conscious but disoriented, with visible injuries to his face. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died despite lifesaving efforts. Medical staff determined the victim suffered severe head and facial trauma, authorities said.
Due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and assumed control of the investigation.
Investigators said the circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.
The victim’s identity has not been released pending confirmation and notification of next of kin.
