San Marcos, CA–A domestic violence suspect was arrested following an intense 11-hour SWAT standoff in San Marcos on Monday, according to authorities.
The standoff began around 10 a.m. in the 2200 block of Flatiron Way, where deputies from the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station were investigating a domestic violence report.
Upon arrival, the man, identified as 44-year-old Jeremiah Gowdy, refused to cooperate with detectives and threatened to harm himself and law enforcement officers. Although no one else was inside the apartment, authorities evacuated nearly ten nearby units as a precaution.
The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) and Crisis Negotiations Team were called in to assist in response to the escalating situation. The Psychiatric Emergency Response Team was also present at the scene, attempting to provide mental health support.
Deputies made several attempts throughout the day to de-escalate the situation and negotiate with Gowdy, but their efforts were unsuccessful. By 9 p.m., the SED/SWAT team deployed a chemical agent to gain access to the apartment, leading to Gowdy’s arrest without further incident. He was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation before being booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of felony domestic violence and violating an emergency protective order.
A search of the apartment, conducted under a warrant, resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms, including rifles and handguns. Authorities also provided domestic violence resources to Gowdy’s wife and children.
In line with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office policy, identifying details of domestic violence victims are withheld for their safety and privacy.
This incident comes during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to supporting survivors and raising awareness about the dangers of domestic abuse. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1. Help is available, and victims can seek support and protection.
