Escondido, CA–Five people were arrested Wednesday during a joint operation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and the Escondido Police Department targeting unauthorized homeless encampments in the Escondido and Harmony Grove areas, authorities said.
Deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s Homeless Assistance Resource Team (HART) joined officers from the Escondido Police Department’s Community Enhancement Bureau to address ongoing community complaints involving illegal encampments and public nuisance issues. The encampment extended across the city of Escondido and the unincorporated community of Harmony Grove.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, HART deputies and Escondido police officers had previously contacted individuals living in the encampment, offering services that included emergency shelter, mental health care and substance abuse treatment. Authorities also advised those camping in the area that camping on private property is prohibited.
During Wednesday’s enforcement operation, deputies and officers arrested five people on allegations of illegal lodging, outstanding warrants and providing a false name to law enforcement.
Authorities also towed six vehicles after residents reported excessive trash and debris associated with vehicles parked in a residential neighborhood. Crews from the City of Escondido Public Works Department removed multiple truckloads of trash and debris from the site.
The Sheriff’s Office said it continues to use a combined strategy of outreach and enforcement, working with community partners to connect people experiencing homelessness with available services while addressing criminal activity and public safety concerns.
