San Diego, CA–The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning near Pacific Highway following an attempted arrest that ended in an hours-long standoff.
According to authorities, officers with the San Diego Police Department were conducting an abatement detail at approximately 9:45 a.m. when they contacted a man who was known to officers. Investigators said the suspect had a no-bail warrant and was a parolee at large.
The man fled the scene, prompting additional officers to respond. During the pursuit, an officer-involved shooting occurred before the suspect ran into a nearby riverbed.
The San Diego Police Department’s SWAT team responded to assist in the search. Officers eventually located the suspect, leading to a prolonged standoff as the department’s Emergency Negotiation Team attempted to persuade him to surrender peacefully.
After several hours, officers deployed a police K-9, and the suspect was taken into custody.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The suspect is expected to be booked on a felony parole violation.
Under the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Detectives are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Officials said the investigation will undergo the county’s standard review process for officer-involved shootings. Once the Sheriff’s Office completes its investigation, the case will be forwarded to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the officer bears any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officer’s use of force.
