Carlsbad, CA–Carlsbad city officials are stepping up efforts to curb the use of illegal fireworks following the adoption of a new enforcement ordinance by the City Council on April 14.
Although fireworks are already prohibited throughout San Diego County, officials say their use remains a persistent issue in neighborhoods across Carlsbad, particularly during major holidays.
Over the past two years, the city has logged approximately 130 calls for service related to fireworks, many occurring in residential areas during peak periods such as Memorial Day and Fourth of July. Authorities note these incidents increase the risk of fires and injuries while placing additional strain on police and fire personnel.
Under the ordinance, the Carlsbad Police Department will coordinate with fire and code enforcement officials to respond more effectively to complaints. The measure also expands accountability by holding property owners and renters responsible for illegal fireworks used on or near their property—even if set off by guests.
Violators may face fines of up to $1,000 per incident, with penalties reaching as high as $10,000 per day for ongoing violations.
City leaders say the updated rules are designed to enhance public safety, deter repeat offenses, and provide clearer enforcement mechanisms.
The ordinance will take effect May 14. Prior to implementation, the city plans to launch a public outreach campaign aimed at educating residents about the new regulations.
