San Diego, CA–A 23-year-old man walking within traffic lanes of Interstate 5 early Thursday morning was fatally struck by a vehicle in San Diego, California Highway Patrol said.
At around 6 a.m., the man was walking within the lanes of northbound I-5, south of Hawthorn Street when a silver Kia sport utility vehicle, driven by a 28-year-old man from San Diego, struck the pedestrian. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Kia remained on the scene of the collision, CHP Officer Jesse Matias stated in a news release.
The number 4 and 5 lanes were closed during the investigation for about one hour. The driver of the Kia was uninjured and not suspected to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform a toxicology report to determine if the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
CHP is investigating the incident.
