San Diego, CA–The National Weather Service issued a warning for high surf and potential coastal flooding set to impact San Diego County starting Thursday morning.
A High Surf Advisory will be in effect from 8 a.m. on Thursday until 2 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Anticipated breakers ranging from six to 12 feet, with the highest sets reaching up to 15 feet, are expected to hit the coastal areas.
The advisory highlights concerns about localized beach erosion and minor tidal overflow, particularly during morning high tides. Inexperienced swimmers and surfers are strongly urged to refrain from entering the water due to hazardous conditions.
Saturday is expected to witness the largest waves, and the weather forecast also indicates an 80% chance of showers on both Friday and Saturday. Beach access may be limited due to coastal flooding.
Despite the challenging conditions, the annual Penguin Plunge on New Year’s Day is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The forecast for that day anticipates a significant drop in surf intensity, a chance of showers, and temperatures reaching near 60 degrees.
