ENCINITAS–A 73-year-old Massachusetts woman was struck by a commercial vehicle while she crossed a street in Encinitas, Sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.
The woman was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk. At about the same time, the 22-year-old driver of a commercial delivery truck entered the intersection from Balour Drive and made a left turn to travel eastbound on Santa Fe Drive. The driver, by his own admission, was looking at his GPS when he entered the intersection and did not see the pedestrian. The driver side mirror of the delivery van struck the pedestrian’s head knocking her to the ground.
The woman was transported to Scripps La Jolla’s Hospital where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for a serious head injury.
Drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision. Distracted driving and fatigue do appear to be a factor in the collision.
