SAN DIEGO–A pedestrian was struck and killed by a southbound Amtrak train Thursday in San Diego, the Sheriff’s department said.

Deputies from the San Diego Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit responded to the collision at the intersection of West Hawthorn Street and the railroad tracks in San Diego.

The train was traveling southbound at approximately 40 miles per hour when the engineer observed a female walking between the railroad tracks. The engineer activated emergency braking but was unable to stop before the train collided with the female.

She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
