SAN DIEGO–An alleged DUI driver was pulled from his vehicles minutes before an Amtrak train struck the vehicle, according to transit authorities.

Sheriff’s department transit authorities responded to the 1:35 p.m. collision on the railroad tracks near the intersection of West Grape Street and California Street in San Diego.

A southbound Amtrak Train was traveling approximately 35 miles per hour when the train operator observed a vehicle stopped in the middle of the track. The vehicle was stuck on track number two approximately 100 yards south of the railroad crossing. The train went into emergency braking but was unable to stop in time and collided with the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was safely removed from the vehicle by officers on scene, before the train collided with the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was evaluated and arrested for suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.
