San Diego, CA–County environmental health officials have issued an advisory Wednesday for all San Diego County coastal beaches and bays due to sewage-contaminated runoffs followed by the recent rainfall.
The water contact closure for the Tijuana Slough shoreline is being extended to include the Imperial Beach, Silver Strand, and Coronado shorelines. The Tijuana River is currently flowing and reaching recreational waters, the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality said in a release.
The ocean shoreline from the International Border to the south end of Imperial Beach will remain closed until sampling confirms these areas are safe for water contact.
The Children’s Pool in La Jolla, Campland in Mission Bay, La Jolla Cove, and Tidelands Park in Coronado remain under the county’s advisory.
A closure has been issued for Encina Creek at Carlsbad State Beach as a result of a confirmed sewage release. The closure area extends 1300 feet south and north of Encina Creek. Avoid water contact in the closure area due to sewage impacts.
Beachgoers are advised that rain brings urban runoff, which can cause bacteria levels to rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers, and lagoon outlets, and may cause illness.
Water contact such as swimming, surfing, and diving should be avoided during rain and for 72 hours following the rain.
