San Diego, CA–A 29-year-old incarcerated man is facing attempted murder charges after he assaulted a Sheriff’s deputy with a makeshift knife, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. at the San Diego Central Courthouse, located in the 1100 block of Union Street in downtown San Diego.
Ernesto Olea had finished making a scheduled court appearance when he was transferred to a holding cell to await transportation back to the Vista Detention Facility.
When a deputy opened the holding cell door, Olea attacked him. He then tried to stab the deputy in the head and neck with the knife. The deputy was able to fend off the attack and regain control of Olea until additional deputies arrived to assist.
The deputy sustained minor cuts to his hand during the altercation. Olea had a small gash to the top of his head. The deputy was treated at the scene. Olea was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Olea is facing additional charges of attempted murder of a peace officer and possession of a weapon in jail.
