Coast Guard intercepts vessels carrying passengers near Imperial Beach

By Gina Yarbrough

San Diego, CA–The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted two vessels carrying three suspected undocumented migrants about seven miles west of Imperial Beach on Sunday.

According to the Coast Guard, watchstanders at Sector San Diego detected the vessels heading toward U.S. waters at approximately 6:40 a.m. They dispatched a Maritime Safety and Security Team from Seattle to intercept them.

Coast Guard personnel deterred the vessels without using force. As the vessel turned south, three individuals entered the water. The Coast Guard crew, already on scene, recovered all three from the water.

The individuals reported they are Mexican nationals. They were transported to Ballast Point, where emergency medical services evaluated them and found no injuries.

The three were later transferred to the Department of Homeland Security for further processing.
