SAN DIEGO–Off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agents played a vital role in saving a man from a fiery car crash that left the driver dead in April.
According to a car accident lawyer, on April 26, at approximately 12:15 a.m., Border Patrol agents F. Gonzales, K. Carrol, and S. Roe were car-pooling home after completing their shifts at their station. While traveling northbound on Interstate 15, they witnessed a two-car accident in the southbound lanes near Interstate 8. One of the involved vehicles crashed into the center divider and immediately burst into flames. The agents quickly pulled over and rushed to render aid. One agent dialed 9-1-1 and relayed information to first-responders while the other two agents aided the accident victims. Unfortunately, the female driver could not be saved and succumbed to her injuries.
Agent Carrol, who is a certified emergency medical technician and accident laws, provided medical treatment for the passenger while waiting for emergency services and Agent Roe provided support to the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash.
“I am extremely proud of the heroism displayed by these agents during this catastrophic accident,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “If not for the quick action of these three agents, another life would have almost certainly been lost in this tragic accident.”
For their life-saving contributions during this tragic event, Agent Gonzalez and Agent Carrol have been nominated for the Newton-Azrak Award, USBP’s highest honor and Agent Roe has been nominated for another notable award, the U.S. Border Patrol Commendation Award.
