Museum of Photographic Arts’ 9th annual Coming of Age Film Festival.
SAN DIEGO–The Museum of Photographic Arts’ 9th annual Coming of Age Film Festival, in partnership with San Diego State University professors, will present free film screenings related to aging.
Joaquin Anguera, Ph.D., retired professor of Gerontology, School of Social Work at San Diego State University, will introduce films and moderate a question and answer after the films. The festival’s films discussions explore topics relating to intergenerational issues and lifelong growth.
Coming of Age is the only film festival in San Diego dedicated to promoting, reinforcing and celebrating the process and power of aging. The museum creates dialogue and new perspectives on aging through discussion and films that challenge cultural perceptions of life at different ages.
“With our own educational programs ranging from six-year-olds to seniors, this festival promises to inspire and enlighten on an often-overlooked topic. In our extremely youth-centric culture, I think it is fair to say that this film festival is nothing short of counter-cultural,” says Deborah Klochko, MOPA’s executive director and chief curator.
“We hope that we can start a community discussion on the complex and wonderful experiences that accompany old age” says Joaquin Anguera, professor at San Diego State University and co-director of the Coming of Age Film Festival.
The schedule:
May 17 at 7 p.m. – Finding Your Feet
After learning that her husband is having an affair with her best friend, Lady Sandra Abbot goes to London to live with her older sister. The two realize their stark differences and create an inseparable bond through dance.
May 24 at 7 p.m. – Alive Inside
Dementia patients are just one of many victims of a broken healthcare system. Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music and Memory, works with dementia patients to combat memory loss and restore their sense of self through music.
May 31 at 7 p.m. – The Party
One dinner party-turned unexpected announcement provokes revelations among a group of political-minded friends. The sophisticated soiree becomes filled with arguments, shouting and a pointed gun.

The Museum of Photographic Arts is the only San Diego museum with a “Pay What You Wish” admission. It is open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
