Sacramento, CA–San Onofre State Beach, one of the world’s most legendary surf spots, will take center stage during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
LA28 announced that iconic Trestles Beach will stage the Olympic surfing competition on July 2028.
“California’s natural beauty is world-renowned, and with LA28 it will take center stage for the sport the Golden State is best known for – surfing. We’re looking forward to welcoming the world to explore and bask in all that makes our state a global leader,” said Governor Gavin Newsom.
Trestles, part of San Onofre State Beach, has long been revered for its consistent, high-quality waves that attract beginners and pro surfers alike. This beloved set of beaches in San Diego County that attracts 2.5 million visitors a year will bring together the planet’s best surfers to compete on the world’s biggest stage for Olympic gold. This recognition is due in part to the beach’s elite status among professional surfers and its reputation as a momentous location in sparking the West Coast surfing movement.
“We are honored to share this gem of California’s state park system with the world,” said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero. “This iconic beach that has inspired generations of surfers will now welcome the world’s best athletes and show millions what’s possible when public lands are preserved and shared with the world. Thank you to LA28 and the International Olympic Committee for entrusting California State Parks to stage the surfing competition.”
“This is a chance to introduce the world to one of California’s stunning locations,” said California Natural Resources Agency Deputy Secretary for Access Gloria Sandoval. “When people see what’s possible at a world-class beach like Lower Trestles, it opens the door for more people to connect with nature, with community, and with the joy of being outside.”
San Onofre State Beach is unique for its renowned waves and spot in surfing lore but also for its rich cultural history. The park was a large village and burial site of the Acjachemen people over 8,000 years ago and continues to be a sacred, ceremonial, and cultural location for Acjachemen Indians.
State Parks has operated San Onofre State Beach since 1971, under an agreement with the Department of the Navy for use of a portion of the United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. The agreement was extended for 25 years in August 2024, ensuring visitors will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to the beach while preserving its natural resources and recreational opportunities for current and future generations.
“Camp Pendleton is committed to its continued partnership with California State Parks, supporting public enjoyment of San Onofre State Beach. As the 2028 Games bring global attention to this renowned location, we take pride in conserving its legacy and natural beauty,” said Brig. Gen. Nick I. Brown, commanding general, Marine Corps Installations West, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
The economic ripple effects of the 2028 Games will be felt far and wide, with a particular focus on job creation, infrastructure improvements, and expanding opportunities for local businesses. Tourism is one of California Jobs First’s strategic sectors and a key industry for the Los Angeles County Region’s economy.
“Across Southern California, we know that the state will shine as we welcome visitors from around the globe to experience the energy and diversity of the vibrant Los Angeles region. The LA28 Games will drive billions into the local economy, support local businesses, and create jobs while uniting communities in celebration,” said Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development.
In addition, the LA 28 Games will contribute towards equitable access to youth sports through an investment of $160 million across Los Angeles — the single largest investment in youth sports development in California’s history.
As the LA28 Games approach, State Parks will work closely with LA28, the City of Los Angeles, local stakeholders, Tribal partners, athletes, and the global surf community to prepare Trestles Beach to shine on the world stage.
