SAN DIEGO–Vintage performances by Phil Mickelson and Kawhi Leonard allowed the pair to top the list of Stars of the Month for February as selected by the San Diego Sports Association.
In all, 16 pro, San Diego amateur and high school athletes were honored.
Mickelson was dominant in winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by three strokes at 268, a score of 19-under par on one of the native San Diegan’s favorite courses.
Leonard was just as special as the Toronto Raptors won every game in which he participated. The ex-San Diego State Aztec averaged 27-points and 7.5 rebounds a game.
Joining the two were a pair of local pros: Chase De Leo of the San Diego Gulls and goalie Boris Pardo of the San Diego Sockers. De Leo scored 14 points in 11 games, collecting seven goals and seven assists. Pardo, the goalie, led the league with a mere 3.34 goals-against average.
On the amateur front, a pair of UC San Diego basketball players led the way in pacing the Tritons to either a share of or an outright CCAA championship.
Sydney Sharp averaged 17.4 points a game for the women who remained undefeated through the month while Christian Bayne tossed in 22.7-points a game for the men who tied the league title.
Elsewhere, SDSU’s Bonnie Draxler set a school record at 14-10 in the pole vault; transfer Zack Noll started his Point Loma Nazarene baseball career on a high note, going 2-0 with a 1.16 ERA; Akayla Hackson tossed in a school-best eight 3-point field goals in a single game; and Southwestern College’s Gertrude (Trudie) Nixon fired a no-hitter for the softball team.
Cathedral Catholic High’s Isuneh (Ice) Brady and Torrey Pines’ Bryce Pope led their teams to the Open Division basketball titles. They were joined by wrestlers Tyler Badgett of Rancho Bernardo and Maddie Konopka of La Costa Canyon, who finished second in the state wrestling tournament; Bishop’s Sofia Stein in water polo and Torrey Pines’ Denzel Zepeda in soccer.
