POWAY–Poway Unified School District officials are investigating a student who posted a video on social media last weekend containing racial slurs.

School officials on Monday learned about the video that was made off campus grounds by a Poway High School student.

Poway Unified School District released a statement about the controversial video:

“Over the weekend, PUSD administrators and Board members were made aware of an offensive video containing racial slurs posted on social media involving our students. We are taking this matter very seriously as we investigate, and the appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken. While the incident appears to have occurred off school property and after school hours, the Poway Unified School District wants to make it very clear this will not be tolerated. We are extremely disappointed by the students’ behavior and want to .emphasize that it does not reflect our values of making sure our students are able to learn in a safe and caring environment, where all students are respected. Poway High School is a “No Place for Hate” campus and the students and staff have worked hard toward achieving that goal. We are meeting with concerned students, families, and staff, and we are confident we can use this incident as a learning opportunity to improve our overall cultural understanding and collaboration.”

The school district said this type of behavior will not be tolerated on campus.
