San Diego, CA–A woman was killed early Friday morning when her vehicle slammed into a Freightliner truck tractor-trailer that jackknifed on a wet road on Interstate 15, authorities said.
The two-vehicle collision occurred around 2:17 a.m. on Interstate 15, just south of Interstate 8, according to San Diego CHP.
The driver of the Freightliner truck tractor-trailer combination was traveling northbound on Interstate 15 when he lost control of the Freightliner in wet roadway conditions, causing it to jackknife and block all lanes of Interstate 15 northbound. A few minutes later, a Honda CRV, driven by a 76-year-old woman from San Diego, collided with the truck-trailer combination. The driver and solo occupant of the Honda was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. The 27-year-old driver of the Freightliner, from Adelanto, CA was uninjured in the collision.
All lanes of Interstate 15 were closed for around three and a half hours while traffic was diverted to Interstate 8. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, which is pending a toxicology report through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The cause of this collision and sequence of events is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol San Diego Area.
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
