OCEANSIDE–Oceanside police officers arrested two individuals for DUI and cited 18 people for either driving on a suspended license or driving without a license during a DUI checkpoint on Friday in Oceanside.
The checkpoint was held at 4700 North River Rd. from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. A total of 650 vehicles passed through the checkpoint.
Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired, according to the Oceanside Police Department.
As businesses continue to reopen, including bars and restaurants, impaired driving remains a top traffic safety concern for law enforcement.
The Oceanside Police Department will hold another DUI/drivers license checkpoint on January 22, 2021.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
