19-year-old killed in Vista shooting identified

Vista, CA–Authorities have identified the 19-year-old who was killed in a shooting in Vista last week.

The victim was identified as Antonio Junior Calderon Mendiola, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The shooting also left three other young men wounded. A 17-year-old male and an 18-year-old male are currently in the Intensive Care Unit, while a 16-year-old male remains hospitalized in stable condition, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a wireless 911 call from a cell phone near Civic Center Drive in Vista at 2:30 a.m. Shortly, five people arrived at Palomar Hospital, four of whom were suffering from gunshot wounds.  Mendiola had succumbed to his injuries.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are actively working to gather more information to determine the circumstances and motivation behind the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, and no suspect has been identified at this time.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or after hours at (858) 565-5200. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
