SAN DIEGO–A northbound Amtrak train Saturday collided with an unoccupied vehicle that was stuck on the railroad.

Deputies from the Sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit says the 1:49 p.m. collision occurred near the intersection of Ariane Drive and Morena Boulevard in San Diego.

The driver of the vehicle lost control while turning onto Morena Boulevard. The vehicle hit the curb, went down a small embankment, and became stuck on the railroad tracks. The driver and his passenger got out safely minutes before the train struck the vehicle. The train engineer had activated the emergency braking system upon seeing the vehicle, but could not stop the train prior to the collision.
