Man arrested for stealing horse at gunpoint in Spring Valley

By Gina Yarbrough

Spring Valley, CA–A 29-year-old man was arrested early Monday after Sheriff’s deputies say he allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint and stole his horse in Spring Valley on Sunday evening, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a robbery around 7:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Bancroft Drive.

The victim told deputies that a suspect pointed a firearm at him and stole his horse. Deputies located the suspect a short distance away, but he fled on the stolen horse when they attempted to make contact.

The Sheriff’s Aerial Support to Regional Enforcement Agencies unit tracked the suspect from overhead as he rode to a nearby residence and went inside, authorities said. Due to what officials described as the high-risk nature of the situation, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail and Crisis Negotiations Team responded to assist.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., the suspect exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was identified as Gabriel De La Torre Santana. The horse was recovered and returned to its owner. De La Torre Santana was booked into the San Diego Central Jail.
