Poway, CA–The Poway Symphony Orchestra continues its 2025-2026 concert season with “Mendelssohn Classics,” a concert of elegance, drama, and Romantic-era brilliance on March 22 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.
Under the direction of Conductor and Music Director John LoPiccolo, the program celebrates the expressive power and lyrical beauty of Felix Mendelssohn. The concert opens with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 (“Reformation”), a bold and majestic work that blends grandeur with moments of profound reflection. The final movement quotes the famous protestant hymn, “A Mighty Fortress.”
At the heart of the concert is Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, with YuEun Gemma Kim as the guest soloist. This piece is one of the most beloved and frequently performed violin concertos, known for its soaring melodies and emotional depth.
Completing the afternoon program is Beethoven’s Overture to Fidelio, a dramatic and triumphant prelude that embodies themes of courage and freedom.
An award-winning South Korean violinist, Kim concertizes internationally as both a soloist and chamber musician and is recognized for her versatility across modern and baroque repertoire. She studied at the University of Southern California with renowned violinist Midori Goto and is a core member of the Los Angeles–based chamber orchestra Delirium Musicum. Her recent honors include the Jeffrey Thomas Award from American Bach Soloists, as well as top prizes and semifinalist placements in major international competitions.
“Mendelssohn’s music combines elegance with incredible emotional intensity,” said LoPiccolo. “The Violin Concerto is both intimate and exhilarating, and YuEun Gemma Kim brings exactly the kind of musical insight and virtuosity that makes this piece shine. She has a rare ability to connect deeply with the music while dazzling the audience.”
