El Cajon, CA–Captain Jeremiah Larson has been promoted to Chief of Police for the City of El Cajon, effective December 18, succeeding outgoing Chief Mike Moulton, who is retiring, the City of El Cajon announced on Tuesday.
Larson, a lifelong El Cajon resident and Granite Hills High School graduate has served with the El Cajon Police Department since 2002. Over his 21-year career, he advanced through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 2014, a lieutenant in 2019, and a captain in 2023. City Manager Graham Mitchell announced his appointment as the city’s 16th Police Chief.
“Captain Larson’s extensive experience, high ethical standards, and deep love for our community make him the right choice,” said Mitchell.
Larson has held various roles, including assignments in Patrol, Investigations, and Special Enforcement. He was a SWAT member for 18 years and has contributed to the department’s Peer Support team for over a decade.
Outgoing Police Chief Moulton praised Larson’s leadership.
“His work ethic and commitment to our values have prepared him to lead our department into the future,” Chief Moulton said.
Larson holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from National University and a Master’s in Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego. He is also a graduate of the Senior Management Leadership Institute for Police. He resides in East County with his wife and four children.
“It is an honor to lead this agency, and I look forward to preserving and strengthening the community’s trust in its police department,” said Larson.
Larson will be officially sworn in during the El Cajon City Council meeting on January 14 at 3 p.m.
