San Diego, CA–An inmate in the custody of the Sheriff’s Department has died at a hospital following a medical emergency at the George Bailey Detention Facility, authorities said.
On September 23, a 66-year-old man was booked into Sheriff’s custody after being extradited from El Salvador. He was extradited for a 1991 murder that occurred in the Emerald Hills area of San Diego. The investigation was led by the San Diego Police Department.
On November 15, while incarcerated at the George Bailey Detention Facility, the man was transported to a local hospital due to shortness of breath. Due to medical complications, he was transferred to the ICU.
On November 26, around 9:13 a.m., Sheriff’s homicide investigators were notified the man passed away at the hospital.
“The male’s name is not being released at this time as we try to locate and notify his family. A Sheriff’s Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The Sheriff’s Office will notify the Consulate General of El Salvador of the incident.
The Citizen’s Law Enforcement Review Board representative was notified of this incident. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and will conduct a thorough investigation.
